I find the hills very difficult – are there flatter rides?

Berkhamsted is in a valley, so its quite normal to have to get up a few hills just to get out of town! We suggest the shorter, easier paced rides for members who are just getting used to the hills around Berkhamsted. There is no pressure to get up the hills quickly either – we all go at our own pace and meet at the top of hills for some recoup time before heading off again.

I’m new to cycling – is it still ok to join?

Yes! We welcome all levels of cyclist, from beginner through to amateur racer. We run courses for those who are absolute beginners – at the other end of the scale, we have a group who race regularly, as well as a Triathlon training group.

If you are unsure about road cycling or would like to understand what is required to get involved, please email our membership secretary membership@berkocc.com who will be happy to help get you on your way.

What routes do you use and where can I find them?

BCC has almost 100 routes to suit our membership and these are on a 13 week rotation. Currently the routes are sent round to members during the week before the club ride. All of the routes are available to club members on the Ride With GPS website. We have also created reserve rides for wetter weather, which tend to avoid smaller back roads which can get a bit muddy.

How long are your rides?

Rides vary in length from 20 miles to 50+. All routes are sent round each week (or are available to club members on the Ride With GPS website) which means you can plan for the ride ahead in terms of how much hydration you will need, how much time you should allow, food etc.
More information about the club rides can be found by clicking here.

How fast do you ride?

We generally have 5 groups that go out each week, ranging from 12mph average up to 18+. You can decide on the day of the ride which speed and distance you would like to ride – but we advise that you check the routes which are provided… some routes take in more hills than others!
More information about the club rides can be found by clicking here.

When are the club rides?

The club ride takes place every Saturday morning. All club riders meet together at Berkhamsted Tesco car park at 7:45am – rain or shine!  Over the Summer months from June to October we meet at Berkhamsted Cricket Club. We split into groups according to how fit you are feeling, then head off at 8:00am.

If you are thinking of coming on a trial ride and the weather conditions are forecast to be very bad (below freezing temperature, high winds or very heavy rain) please check our public Facebook page here or email our rider coordinator here as there are occasional changes made to the ride time or cancellations.

Do you need to wear reflective clothing?

Reflective clothing is not compulsory, but we do advise that it is a useful, especially in the darker months of winter. Please do think about what you wear – we want everyone to be safe out there on the roads.

Are there any age restrictions?

We accept members aged 16 and over. Juniors (16 and 17 yr olds) must obtain a parental consent form which is on the youth membership page here.

Do I have to wear a helmet?

Yes – helmets are compulsory for all members. You can read the other rules we ask all our members to adhere to in the ride etiquette which is on the them’s-the-rules page here.
